Saturday Update

Wow, what a week it's been. England start their final preparations for the World Cup by defeating Mexico 3-1 at home in Wembley Stadium in front of a full crowd. As mentioned in my previous post, I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance at Kelly's Pub, which gave me even more inspiration towards my Footy Talk MTL project in the making.

I set out the week by researching several venues where I could watch the World Cup games. I have already decided on watching the England game one vs. USA at Kelly's Pub, the following England games are yet to be decided.

What I was interested in learning was, where exactly are the best spots to watch the other competing countries? So I went down the list in an attempt to organize my schedule for the first round of games. What sprang to mind immediately was simply creating an invitation, both openly here on this blog, as well as through Facebook, requesting friends to make suggestions, and or accompany me to the venue of your choice.

Park Extension for Greek games, perhaps, but where exactly? Little Italy or the East End for Italy games, but again, where exactly? I am even open to massive Football house parties, I can come visit you and the family and report on the ambiance and passion in your home, or even local community center.

Over the next couple of days I will be creating invitations on Facebook requesting spots to best watch the World Cup, World Cup Party invites, as well as giving you the opportunity to take part by messaging the invite discussion board. I have a few friends who have expressed their interest in watching games on certain days, so we will always have some extra people along for the games, sometimes even if their country is not represented. Stay posted for more details.

This week I was able to contact one of the members of the Montreal Impact Ultra's, you know the ones at the Montreal Impact game who actually create the real footballing atmosphere, the ones who sing for 90 + minutes, not to mention light flares like their European Fanatic counterparts!! He was quite enthusiastic about meeting up with me and expressed his sincere desire to have me come and enjoy the atmosphere of the Impact crowd from the perspective of the Impact Ultra's in their section at the Saputo Stadium. Of course, I am more than excited about doing so, and thus will be attending a game either tomorrow or next weekend. I will most likely be there on Sunday, cheering in section 114, Section of the ULTRAS!!!

Stay posted through the Blog, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube for more info on the Montreal Impact Ultras! Keep in mind I am going to be attending a match with these guys in the Ultras Section, videos will be made... I better start rehearsing the cheers before I go!

In the meantime, I am keeping a close eye on England and their squad selection. More blogging to come on that topic in the coming days. I shall be keeping you posted about all the upcoming events and preparations for the World Cup in the next few days, until next time, keep on Footy Talking!!

England and Kelly's Pub go hand in hand!!

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of hanging out with some of the most knowledgeable England fans around, I did so at Kelly's Pub in Pointe-Claire. I can guarantee you that you will not find a better spot in Montreal for an England Fan to be. Of course, let us keep in mind that this game was only an exhibition, albeit an important one. Thus, there was only a small fraction of the crowd on hand compared to when the World Cup will kick off for England on June 12th, 2010 vs USA.

The crowd that did show however, are undoubtedly the most dedicated and loyal fans of England. You see, England Super Fans have the obligation of watching ALL ENGLAND GAMES, even ones where the starting 11 are young lads just looking to impress the coach to gain A team status.

These games are in fact the experimentation part of the game. Sort of like a laboratory, searching for the right formula, the chemistry if you will, that will best suit England. IE: the combination of players that allow the least goals against, and score the most goals for, sounds pretty simple doesn't it? Well, truth be told, despite England's' abundance of talent, Fabio Capello the Coach for England this time around, has still not clearly indicated his starting 11 for the opening match vs. USA. Being the eternal optimist that I am, I believe he may be doing so in order to cloud the minds of the opposition. Who will start, who will be on the left, the right, how can one prepare against what one does not know for sure???

It makes it harder for the opposition to perform against a team that has not been clearly indicated well in advance. The trouble with this potential tactic, is that the team itself is not able to fully become a unit, or to develop the needed chemistry that wins tournaments like this. The reason for several key players absence was logical enough, many of the players were from Chelsea and Portsmouth who had just played in the FA Cup Final last weekend, and were given a well needed rest.

The line up was lacking the likes of John Terry, a defensive wall of determination, grit and concentration, surely Terry will make a huge difference on the defensive game of England. Also lacking were Terry's Chelsea team mates, Joe Cole, and Frank Lampard, who add an extra touch in the already dynamic and threatening midfield. Steven Gerrard of Liverpool looked concentrated yet lacked the final touch in getting the ball to his team mate Wayne Rooney.

Rooney who has been recovering from a spate of injuries that slowed down his scoring rampage this season in the Premier League, looked quiet by his own standards, but clearly competitive and ready to go for the World Cup. With a more talented mid-field to come onto the pitch during the World Cup, Rooney will most probably begin to fire on all cylinders.

Peter Crouch, the always enigmatic 6 foot 7 inches of goal scoring height, managed to use his physical frame to his advantage once again, knocking in a header on the line. The goal could have clearly been called offside, or even potentially a hand ball, was awkward yet still a goal.

Something that Crouchy tends to do is knock them in in a variety of ways. Whether they are so called "ugly" goals or not, they are goals all the same. England needs goals, and with Rooney partnering up with crouch, they seem to have a special hypnotic effect on the opposition. One stuns the opposition with dedication, commitment, speed, and determination, the other towers above the defenders awaiting that perfect cross to glance towards the net. So far so good for England despite the missing Chelsea players.

England are doing OK for the moment, but as a true England Super Fan, I along with the other England fans expect a little bit more composure and control of the game. Imposing the England will on the opposition is a must, particularly because ALL the teams at the World Cup have the ability to upset the likes of England. The talent that will be on display at the World Cup will bring new heroes, let us just hope that Wayne Rooney and the England Squad can bring it home this time. It's been a while, and we are tired of waiting.

While I was at Kelly's Pub I had the great pleasure of chatting with the owner, Allen Fox. Originally from Watford England, a dedicated Liverpool and England Fan Mr. Fox runs a truly British establishment. "When you walk into Kelly's pub you feel like you are back in the UK," exclaims one patron, while sipping on his Bodington's pint. Mr.Fox has made all feel welcome in this very friendly pub. Scots, Irish, English and Welsh all feel quite at home at Kelly's, with a variety of Imported Draft Beer from the UK flowing at all times. You can find Guinness, Kilkenny, Bass, Bodingtons, Stella Artois, along with a great variety of other local brews as well.

Great pub food is also available at a good price. Considering the timing of most of the European games, leaving many matches to be watched at the early hours of the morning, Breakfast here is a must. Full English breakfast, Eggs, Home Fries, Bacon, Sausages, Beans, and a lovely cup of coffee are always on hand in the mornings and are a great way of starting the day and enjoying a football match in the most British setting available.

Kelly's is also home to a variety of fan clubs, including the Liverpool Supporters Club and the Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club. Kelly's even sponsors a local Pub side, fittingly named Kelly's Pub Football Club. They play in Division One of the local industrial league, you can catch them at the Catalogna SoccerPlexe in the winter, and at different outdoor fields in the West Island during the summer season.

Kelly's also does its fair share in giving back to the community, holding Charitable Golf tournaments to help the West Island Palliative Care organization, as well as holding an annual Volleyball tournament in aid of the Montreal Children's Hospital.

Kelly's Pub continuously striving to entertain, holds a lovely live music night, with New Orleans style Jazz on Thursday evenings along with some Karaoke for the drunken masses. To keep up to date and take a look at Kelly's Pub and the variety of entertainment Kelly's has to offer check out the website for more details;

Sunny Singing Sunday

I spent Sunday lazing around, canoeing the North West end of Ile-Bizard, and enjoying a sunny day drinking Mojitos, eating Mom's cooking, and singing some England Footy Chants. I do hope you are thoroughly entertained. Keep in mind the singing started once I'd already consumed several Mojito's!!

Saturday is for Sports!!

Wow, what a long day of sporting entertainment it was yesterday. I kicked off the day by enjoying a nice large Coffee at the Catalogna SoccerPlexe in Lachine. It was severely needed, as I was awoken in the middle of the night by my wife, who was awoken by the scary "screams" for help from my cat, who it turns out was going for a swim in my neighbors pool.

The poor little thing didn't know how to get out of the pool, and thank God my wife woke me up on time to jump the neighbors fence, jump into the pool (not yet de-winterized) and grab little Cim Bom and get him out of the water. I was about to give him animal mouth to mouth to breathe some life into the little guy when I realized he was ok, in shock, but ok.

In any case, little Cim Bom, who in reality is not that little for a cat, is doing fine and making a speedy recovery from the trauma he suffered going for a midnight swim.

Now back to FOOTY. The Champions League final was held on a Saturday this year, parting from the tradition of holding the final during the middle of the week. This way more folks were able to watch without skipping school or work for the day. A great idea, the only thing is for Montrealers' it wasn't the best timing possible, as the Montreal Canadians and Philadelphia Flyers game 4 was to be held at basically the exact same time. No trouble if you can multi-task by watching two TV screens at the same time, which I found out yesterday I can do, but damn does it take away from the interest in either game!!

Like an A.D.D experiment gone wrong my head was going bonkers, hearing "Hamit Altintop has the ball on the right flank, whips in a ball towards the Inter Goal." and what I am looking at is P.K. Subban skating behind his own net. Not the easiest thing to do but hey, that's the length a true Super Fan will go to to satisfy his sporting urges!!

Bayern Munich had the typical German organization and work ethic, and it looked as though they were going to be able to work one out, when Inters' Argentinian Striker Diego Milito stepped it up and showed world class finish by adding not one but two goals to his Champions League Final tally, putting the contest out of reach for the Germans. Jose Mourinho showed once again that he is "Fantastic". Taking a team to the Champions League Final and winning despite the strength of the opposition is something that Jose knows how to do. A master strategist who knows what he wants, its only a matter of time before he is offered big money by a national side, who is content on winning either the World Cup of the Euro, stay tuned and mark those words!!

Even though it was quite difficult to get a true sense of the game while trying to consume both the Habs and the Champions League final simultaneously, I have to say thank you to the staff at Catalogna SoccerPlexe for making it at least a possibility to watch both games at the same time.

I shall make no comment on the Canadians as a 3-0 drubbing at home is not worth commenting on, I am pretty disappointed with the HABS!!

I was also able to eat a lovely Chicken Sandwich with an abundance of golden crispy fries that I have to say was more than a generous portion for the price. Had it been a regular day I would have been downing it with a couple of pints of Bass, which they do have available along with a great variety of other drinks, yet I had a game to play later on at 9pm that night, didn't want to de-hydrate and play like shite now did I?

Turns out that I made the right decision not to drink any alcoholic beverages that day, because our team was in serious need of working legs. Down 4-1 with 15 minutes to go, I managed to net a goal bringing us to 4-2. The goal itself was a result of strong pressure on the goaltender, by yours truly, resulting in a turn over. Blocking the goalies clearance and passing it back to my Argentinian strike partner Dulio, he tapped it right back in my direction and all I had to do was chip it above the goaltender who was diving towards the ball. Now with 10 minutes remaining and two goals down we were awarded a free kick for a foul outside the area. The kick was delivered brilliantly by Fayce, towards Tom Cullen who had it go off of his chest and into the goal.

We immediately began pressuring the other team as they showed signs of nervousness. Pouring our midfield forward I received another golden pass from Dulio unleashing me onto the goaltender, on the penalty spot I ripped one over the goalies right shoulder and just like that from 4-1 down, in 15 minutes or so, we were level, and just on time, as the referees whistle blew literally 2 minutes after our tying goal. A well deserved tie, we are now beginning to find our rhythm and I cannot wait until our next game!!

The next game up for my viewing pleasure will be the Exhibition game tomorrow of ENGLAND vs. MEXICO. It promises to be a preview of both teams skills and an attempt at putting a starting 11 on the pitch that should more or less resemble the actual WORLD CUP Starting 11 for these two sides.

I will be watching the game at Kelly's Pub in Pointe Claire, feel free to contact me if you would like to join me for the game. The game will be at 21:00 English time which is 4pm Montreal Time. If I am wrong on the time I shall be sure to change it before tomorrow, I'll triple check later!!

Calling all FOOTBALL/Soccer Fans in MONTREAL

Calling all FOOTBALL/Soccer Fans in MONTREAL

As I mentioned in my previous posts, I've been selected as the Montreal Gazette England Super Fan. This came about because I submitted a list of written reasons as to why I would be best suited to represent England as a "Super Fan" in Montreal.

What that means more specifically is that a reporter from the Montreal Gazette will contact me both before and after all of the England Matches. The Gazette also encouraged all selected "Super Fans" to be creative and report back to the Gazette with all the content possible. Thus bringing us to Footy Talk MTL, a work in progress!! You may follow all World Cup Super fan action on The Gazette website ; http://montrealgazette.com/goalposts

What I am doing right now is researching where to watch the many games that will be played during the Fifa World Cup 2010. This means that I am also looking for interested FANS of various countries who want to introduce the world to their football culture and traditions, as well as where the best spots are to watch Football/Soccer in Montreal. I will be meeting up with Fans from around the world, watching the Games with them, taking some short video clips and writing about my experience afterwards. I will be writing as a loyal England Fan, with an open heart and mind, but don't forget when we end up playing each other, I may have to sit across the room to avoid any tension... I joke ;)

So if you are a Football Fan of any country that is in the World Cup this summer, and you would like to show me the best spot to watch in Montreal, well what are you waiting for? contact me NOW:)

The Countdown Begins

Ah, the countdown to the World Cup, how long it may seem. The truth is it honestly begins the moment a World Cup Champion is crowned. 4 Years of long hard work, that is honored for a full 4 years, yet which can be fully enjoyed for but a couple of months, if that.

You see, football is a massive sport, one that brings in a serious amount of money and which in turn has turned it into a massive business. Most of the time clubs are vying for players, seeing who can purchase which player for which insane price, yet it all comes to a full stop when talking National Team Football. Your Country is your team, no ifs, ands' or buts' about it.

Club teams can often come into conflict with the National Team Coaches, due to the manner in which leagues, cups and tournaments overlap each other and create injury worries for teams, both Club and Country. Yet nothing can sum up the importance and feeling that both Players and Coaches, Club and Country, Fans and Professionals, feel about this moment in time that shows up once every 4 summers. The World Cup is truly THE PRIZE in Football!!

This year I am humbled to announce, that I Deniz Oliver, have won a competition with the Montreal Gazette to represent England as Montreals' ENGLAND SUPERFAN during the FIFA 2010 World Cup. I will be covering the FIFA 2010 World Cup with an emphasis on England, as I am an England Super Fan, but as well, I shall use this opportunity to cover some of the other matches as well, in an attempt to bring you some Montreal Ambiance reports. What I mean by this more specifically, is that I will be covering the 2010 World Cup from the Montreal perspective. Visiting different pubs, bars and viewing areas around the city looking to find the most exhilarating football atmosphere in Montreal. Covering not only the games themselves but more importantly for the Pub going patrons, the best spot for food, drinks, ambiance and in these economically draining times, best bang for the buck.

I look forward to sharing my experience with all you Football Fans out there, who knows perhaps we can get some more Canadians to start calling Soccer by its real name... FOOTBALL!!

I shall be meeting with the Montreal Gazette this evening to give them an interview and take some photos in my lovely England Kit. So it is safe to say, I am not really a neutral, yet I will try to be impartial during my coverage, operative word being try.

23 Days to go folks!! COME ON ENGLAND!!
